The Finnish War Veteran Organisations

Expertise

In Finland, the Second World War broke out on 30 November 1939 and lasted until 27 April 1945. More than 600 000 men and 100 000 women fought in the front. Additionally, war touched each and every Finnish citizen also in the home front.

Finland was able to maintain her independency, but with a huge toll. Some 100 000 soldiers were killed and almost 200 000 soldiers wounded. On top of that Finland lost 10 % of her land mass and had to reinhabit some 400 000 refugees from the lost areas.

The Finnish War Veteran organisations were established already during the war. Ever since their main tasks have been to take care of the veterans’ health and rehabilitation as well as maintain the veteran generation’s heritage. Most of the practical work through the years has been executed by tens of thousands of volunteers all over the country and even abroad. Medical and mental healthcare has naturally been taken care by professionals.

One specific supported target group have been the 30 000 war widows and some 55 000 war orphans. Very often innocent children suffer the most from wars. Their injuries and traumas follow them for the rest of their lives. Despite of that, astonishingly little attention has been drawn on this topic worldwide.

WHY NADIJA?

With some 80 years history the Finnish War Veteran organisations have built up deep knowledge and understanding for needs and requirements how to support veterans and civilians who have suffered from the war. That’s why the initiative to establish “Nadija, Children’s Hospital & Research Institute” in Ukraine is seen utmost important and is warmly welcomed.  In the future the practical solutions deriving from the initiative may have value outside Ukraine, even globally. We are committed to support the effort by our expertise and knowledge.
